As complementary therapists we do not offer to diagnose a client’s condition or claim to provide cures. Complementary therapy compliments and supports orthodox forms of treatment, encouraging the body to heal itself by inspiring physical, mental and emotional well being.
A holistic massage is a tailored treatment that can involve techniques from a variety of therapies, such as aromatherapy, using essential oils, reflexology, trigger point massage and myofascial massage, to create a massage that is unique to each individual client’s needs.
The pace and pressure used can be adapted to work out tension, aches and pains, to soothe and relax, or to stimulate and tone the muscles and tissues.
A body massage would usually include the back, neck, shoulders, arms and legs, but again this can be adapted.
According to the principles of Oriental medicine, Acupressure is the application of pressure to the body to affect the flow of vital energy (Ki) in the 12 meridians. It is extensively practised in China where greater emphasis is given to a person's responsibility for their own health than it is in the West. This is often used as a self-help treatment.
Acupressure is said to be the 'Mother of all Acupuncture' in that it predates the use of needles to stimulate the body's energy flow. It has the same principles as Acupuncture, but the pressure is applied directly to the Acupoints of the body mainly by using the hands, fingers, thumb or knuckles and sometimes by using a smooth, blunt object. Stimulation of the body's meridian system by touch is perhaps one of the oldest healing systems.
Reiki is the name given to a system of natural healing which evolved in Japan from the experience and dedication of Dr Mikao Usui. It is said that Dr Usui was inspired to develop this healing system from ancient teachings after many years of study, research and meditation. He spent the rest of his life practising and teaching Reiki. Today Reiki continues to be taught by Reiki Masters who have trained in the tradition passed down from Master to student.
There are no religious connotations attached to Reiki. Anyone can learn or receive Reiki treatment. The only requirement is the desire to heal or to be healed.
At The Retreat the method of receiving a Reiki treatment is a very simple and calming process. The recipient lies on a warm couch, snuggled under warm blankets. If they are unable to lie down the treatment can be given in a sitting position. The most important element is for the recipient to be comfortable and feel safe and secure in the hands of the therapist. There is no need to remove any clothing.
A full treatment usually takes 1 to 1½ hours.
The feet work the hardest out of all the body parts. They are what hold your weight up all day long, and the longer you walk or stand, the more tired they will become. By receiving a foot treatment and/or a massage you can experience relaxation as well as pain relief.
Your feet have a direct impact on the rest of your body. Like the foundations of a building your feet distribute the weight of everything above them. When a small mechanical problem develops in your feet, the subtle change in the way you walk can cause a chain reaction of adjustments in your posture and walking mechanics. These changes can cause corns, calluses, pains to the foot; placing stress on joints higher up in your body leading to knee, hip or lower back pain.
A few facts about the Foot
When we consider the above, we start to understand why it is so important to ensure we should have our feet regularly checked by professionals so ensuring comfort today and into the future.

There are many benefits to this type of massage, at its most basic it relieves tension and pressure stored from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The bases of foot massage is that the beginning of all reflex zones is in the feet, and by rubbing and manipulating these areas of the feet, healing can occur (Journal of Advanced Nursing, Volume 37, Number 2, January 2002 , pp. 199-207(9). Based on this belief, a regular foot massage could also have healing qualities because the necessary zones may be rubbed and manipulated (even if it’s unintentionally).
Another benefit is the release of stress. There have been studies performed on patients of heart surgery that showed there was a significant decrease in the stress of patients after a foot massage. This could mean that a foot massage not only causes relaxation due to less stress, but better health as well. Since heart disease is linked with mental well-being i.e. too much stress can lead to a heart attack. A foot massage can be indirectly causing better overall health, as well as recovery and prevention.
Whilst at L&S Holistic Health Care a basic foot massage is given with all foot treatment a more in-depth massage can be provided lasting 40 minutes
